Get with the Times! Animation Contest Weekly Winner 7: World War
This blog is about to deconstruct in 5…4…3…
We kid, of course, but after watching this week’s winning animation, we’ve got transformers and futuristic war on the mind. Congrats to vincentch20 for his 3D animation World War, which garnered 835 community votes.
“It’s the simple idea of anti-war or anti-nuclear, expressed through two robots fighting badly with each other. Used oriental city and World War II as a background as a reminder to people about the cruelty of the atomic explosion 53 years ago.”

Currently an artist at The Creative-Assembly, UK, Vincent CHAI Chung Chieng has experience as a game cinematic 3D artist, teaching, and a digital animation degree.
Inspired by movies like Transformers, Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down, Vincent’s animation World War, created for degree project, won Grand Prix, Audience Choice Award at Animation Expose 2008 by University of Hertfordshire. With a love for VFX movies, he is particularly interested in the magic of software created visual effects: “I created a story which included bits of everything in CG – from preproduction, modeling, texturing, animation, visual effects, lighting and compositing.”
A variety of software was used to create World War: Maya for 3D, Photoshop for texture, After Effects for compositing and visual effects, and Metal Ray to render using HDRI in HD format. “Compositing plays an important part, as I was working with a mobile workstation (Dell M90), and most of the shots were set to be static and render into different layers to minimize the time for rendering.”
With schools and students following the transition to HD, Vincent and his fellow classmates were required to render their animations in High Definition: “And I found the quality is superb! The details of textures and models were showed clearly.”

Sorry to be an arse, but 1945 was 63 years ago. Time flies.
